#151 Record winter temperatures, Arizona sues Kalshi, transient war
Observations
This week saw record-breaking temperatures in the Bay Area, with our city hitting a high of 32°C (93°F) on Tuesday. This is an all time high for March since records started in 1930, breaking the 2004 record. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday each broke daily all-time records. The last day of winter was on Thursday.
I realize that I write to AI chatbots is the way Epstein wrote to everyone… like the backspace key doesn’t exist and like my spacebar is randomly misfiring.
Not going to happen under this administration, but prediction markets need to be regulated. Insider trading feels like cheating to me, and as much as the prediction markets try to dress it up as “information democratization” or some shit like that, let’s get real — it’s gambling. There’s nothing wrong with gambling, but it needs regulation and guardrails like all other forms of gambling (and I include in that bucket stuff like options trading).
Another justification is that prediction markets aren’t necessarily used for insider trading and gambling purposes, but can be used for hedging. Yes, and Napster could be used to exchange non-infringing music… but it’s certainly not the predominant use.
The market still seems to be pricing in the Iran war as a short-term, transient thing. Let’s hope it isn’t transient in the same way the Fed thought inflation was transient a few years ago.
